Nàdar Gin wins “Outstanding Business Engagement” at the 2022 Herald Higher Education Awards

The world’s first climate positive gin, Nàdar, was recognised at the Herald's Higher Education Awards on Tuesday evening, when the team behind the gin won the “Outstanding Business Engagement” for their efforts to create and build awareness of sustainable spirits.

Arbikie Master Distiller, Kirsty Black, accepted the award alongside her former PHD mentors and collaborators from The James Hutton Institute and Abertay University.

Looking at the entire production and supply chain and thinking across the entire range of inputs and outputs on the Arbikie Estate, Kirsty and partners created the world's first climate positive gin, closely followed by a vodka produced on the same basis, to considerable press and public interest around the world, including features from VOGUE & CNN.

The team’s use of high-quality video and great storytelling has contributed greatly to the awareness and understanding of what has been done and how it could inspire others to follow in their footsteps.

A 700ml bottle of Nàdar gin has a carbon footprint of -1.54 kg CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent), meaning it avoids more carbon dioxide emissions than it creates. This environmental performance is mainly achieved by utilising the most innovative and surprising ingredient - the humble pea. After years of study by Kirsty Black and partners, it was concluded that peas were an ideal choice for the planet. This is because the pea crop requires no nitrogen fertiliser and all useful components of the peas from the dehulling (de-skinning) and distilling process, can be used to create home-grown cattle feed.

'Going against the Grain' - a short film created to capture the essence of Arbikie and the creation of Nàdar.
