THE HAUNTING AT ARBROATH ABBEY

THE HAUNTING AT ARBROATH ABBEY

Scotland is known for it's steeping history, eerie ghost stories and haunted landmarks including House of Dun and Craigievar Castle. However, this Halloween we are diving into some haunted history very close to Arbikie Distillery at Arbroath Abbey.

Arbroath Abbey is just a short drive from our estate, you can see the silhouette of the ruin as you pass through Arbroath. The Abbey was founded in 1178 and is most famous for its federation with the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath, devised by Abbot Bernard, the Chancellor of Scotland under King Robert I. The Abbey fell into ruin after the Reformation. From 1590, its stones were raided for buildings in the town of Arbroath. This continued until early 1800s when steps were taken to preserve the remaining ruins.

The haunting at Arbroath Abbey is said to be from the Abbey monks from years ago and Cardinal Beaton, who was the last abbot of Arbroath Abbey. The sounds of religious chanting can be heard emanating from the historical grounds of the Abbey. Witnesses have also reported sightings of mysterious apparitions of flowing hooded robes that float across the grounds and surrounding areas of Arbroath Abbey. Furthermore, reported fragrant smells coming from a particular area in the Abbey and absurd noises caught on tape in the Abbot House...
