World's first distillery to be powered by hydrogen

World's first distillery to be powered by hydrogen

'The world's first distillery to be powered by hydrogen'

A pledge by the UK government and a positive legacy from the hosting of COP26 last year, has matured into our distillery becoming, what we believe to be, the first in the world to be powered by green hydrogen.

We are delighted to announce that we have been given the green light to install a green hydrogen energy system at our distillery, comprising a 1 MW wind turbine, electrolyser, hydrogen storage and hydrogen boiler system. This project is in collaboration with hydrogen experts, Logan Energy, and sustainable specialists, Locogen. It will allow us to move away from traditional distilling processes and instead, use zero-carbon green hydrogen generated on site.

Just after COP26 held in Glasgow last November, the UK government announced it would be investing just over 11 million pounds to assist up to four spirit producers ditch fossil fuels in favour of hydrogen and biogas.

The Green Distillers Competition is part of the UK Government’s Net Zero Innovation Portfolio.

Iain Stirling, co-owner of Arbikie Distillery, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen and I hope it shows that UN Climate Conferences can indeed deliver action on the ground”.
“If we can demonstrate success, which I am sure we will, there is no reason why all distillers -- big and small -- in Scotland cannot be powered by green fuel. Indeed, it is part of our ethos to share what we are doing”.

John Stirling, co-owner of Arbikie Distillery, said: “This has the potential to transform the distilling industry. We are delighted to be working with energy experts Locogen and Logan Energy."

“We aim to be one of the world’s most sustainable distilleries so being able to use green hydrogen power will be another significant step on our sustainability journey.”
